Cursor vs Claude Code for non-developers: which should you use?

Cursor is an AI code editor. Claude Code is an AI agent you talk to. Here's how they differ for non-developers, which to start with, and how to stay safe in both.

Both tools can build a real app from plain-English requests. They feel very different to use, though, and the right one depends on how you like to work. This is the Cursor vs Claude Code comparison for beginners, without the developer jargon.

The one-sentence difference

  • Cursor is a code editor app with AI built in. You see your files, the AI's changes and a chat side by side.
  • Claude Code is an AI agent from Anthropic that you mostly talk to. It reads your project, edits files and runs commands for you. It started in the terminal and now also runs inside editors and other apps.

Side by side

Cursor Claude Code
What it looks like A full editor window with files, code and an AI chat panel A conversation, in a terminal or inside an editor
How you see changes Visually, file by file, before and after Described in the chat; you can open files to check
Instruction file Rules in .cursor/rules/*.mdc, or AGENTS.md CLAUDE.md (it can also read AGENTS.md)
Undo built in Checkpoints you can restore from the chat Checkpoints you open with /rewind
Feels best for People who like to see everything People happy to describe and review

Both are paid products with free or trial options that change often, so check each site for current plans.

Which to start with

Pick Cursor if you're brand new, you want to watch exactly what changes, or the word "terminal" makes you nervous. Seeing files change in front of you is a great way to learn what your app is made of.

Pick Claude Code if you're comfortable typing a few commands, you like giving bigger tasks and reviewing the result, or you already pay for Claude.

Plenty of people use both: Claude Code running inside Cursor's built-in terminal works fine. Both tools can read an AGENTS.md file, so one set of instructions can cover both.

The safety setup is the same in both

Whichever you pick, the same three habits prevent most disasters:

  1. Give it rules. See Cursor rules for beginners or what to put in CLAUDE.md.
  2. Make git save points before big changes. See git for vibe coders.
  3. Know how to undo. See how to undo AI changes in Cursor and Claude Code.
